Before you buy him a cat I would suggest that you get him a book about cats and caring for them. I don’t know if there is any cat that may not scratch or bite sometime or other. However, if they are not mistreated it may be less common for them to do so. I think that most only do it out of self defense.

Its hard to explain to a child how to take care of a cat. I got my first cat when I was four or five and it worked out fine. If your looking for a pure breed than I cannot help. I have cats that were barn cats and they don’t scratch or bite on purpose. They only scratch when I am not paying attention while playing with them and opps they scratched me and they don’t bite unless we are playing rough with them and that does not hurt at all. So mostly just see how the kitten reacts. If they are skittish or abused they might scratch and bite all the time, but most kittens won’t attack people viciosly.

I have a PERSIAN and let me tell you i have never gotten biten and scratched by him sweet little cat they are known for being friendly loving cats they are very snuggly by nature …… depending on how old your son is i would suggest you let him do little stuff and you take care of the rest like litter box training seeing as little kids don’t have the patience or attention spand for that. let him feed it. teach him out to brush it from the head to the tail. let him feed the cat stuff like that just help him out

You should try to get a male cat, because they are less ‘hyper’ and they don’t scratch or bite that much.
You probably need a litter box, which someone has to clean daily. Food (Dry food preffered but ask your vet. what your kitten should eat), daily, and water. If you are allowed to feed it milk, not too much. Cat treats are ok too, not too much though.
Maybe some entertainments for it to keep it active and having fun (like a ball, or something simple like string, yarn, or maybe even some cat scratch pads)

Try not to leave the cat out outside too much if no one’s around home to let it back in. Oh, and when your petting the cat, hold it so that it won’t upset the stomach, and make sure don’t yell/scream or run around with the cat, no water or annoying it they can get depressed some times.

Well, hope he finds a nice kitten friend – pal =)

ANY cat that is harassed or provoked will bite or scratch. A cat can only take so much, remember. If your son cannot understand your explanations, I’d hold off until he’s a wee bit older, the get a pet and show him, after teaching him to be respectful and kind to animals of all kinds and to never tease them.

i think it’s very nice to introduce small animals to kids!! but how old is he right now? i know someone’s kids who just don’t understand that it’s not right to feed the kitty with coins and not right to hug it till its gasping for air :/

btw, most kittens do scratch & bite. biting is part of playing to them.

if your kid doesn’t understand how to take care of a kitten, don’t get one till he is older
