Does anyone know any Post Operative care tips for a neutered cat?

We just got our cat neutered today, He looks so miserable. I feel so bad but it was for the best. If any one has any tips for me on his post surgery care I’d be so grateful. I love him so much! I hate to see him in pain. They did give me pain meds but told me not to start untill tomarrow.

He looks miserable cause his little privates hurt….He will be fine. It is easier on the males than the females. Bless you for having it done. Just keep him inside and love him a lot. He will spring back before you know it. Keep an eye out for bleeding, but of the 100′s of cats that I have had or seen neutered I only saw one problem that was very minor and the boy is doing fine. Take care.

PS : some of the way he looks could be residue from the anesthesia also. And, if they told you to start the pain meds tomorrow they probably already gave him some today.

Not a lot you can do besides keep an eye on his condition. He should be fine and you will know when he’s feeling better, he’ll become more active. He is probably still feeling the effects of the anesthetic from surgery, reason not to start meds until tomorrow. Just keep him quite and comfortable. He’ll be his old self soon enough.

Let him sleep as close to the floor as possible, and put the food & water dishes close to his bed. He’ll likely sleep a LOT in the first 24 hrs, but this is normal as long as he’s breathing normally. If he sounds wheezy or gurgly when he breathes take him back to the vet ASAP.

When you start him on the meds, he’ll start to feel better. Check for bleeding or pus coming from the area which can signal an infection.

Depending on his personality, leave him alone or give him lots of attention, whatever he’d appreciate more.

As he gets better, brush him thoroughly (avoiding “the area”) because the stress will make him shed.

Within a week or so he should start to feel normal and will heal fully within another week or so after that.

keep kitty confined to a small room with litter box, food, and water nearby. give him lots of love and attention. make sure he doesn’t bite at his stiches- if he pulls them out, he might have to go in for more surgery. Good luck with the pain medication– if it comes in pill form, make sure you purchase a “piller” and have the vet show you the best way to give a pill (it can be really hard if you’ve never done it before!).
